PPA TRAINING PROGRAMS

Please note:  PPA’s training program for Personal Assistants (PAs) and Consumer Employers (CEs) is currently in development. This page will be updated as classes and training materials become available.  All suggestions and comments are welcome; please contact the office with your input!

GOALS OF THE COMPREHENSIVE TRAINING PROGRAM:

Ø     To provide the highest quality of assistive services possible to all
 Consumer Employers
Ø     To provide health and safety training that will ensure Personal Assistant
and Consumer Employer safety in the workplace (the CE’s home)

Ø     To provide Personal Assistants with official and respected credentials

Ø     To provide training that adheres to and enhances PPA’s commitment to
the Consumer Employer’s right to self-determination
Ø     To strengthen the sense of partnership between the Consumer
 Employer and their Personal Assistant/s.

TRAINING CLASSES:

-CPR and 1st Aid (mandatory)
-Universal Precautions/Health Issues (mandatory)
-Independent Living Recipient Rights (mandatory)
-Lifting and Transferring Safely
-Advanced PA Skills (Bowel/Bladder Management, Range of Motion
 exercises)
-Working with People with Disabilities
-Communication Skills/Conflict Resolution (a class for both PAs and     CEs)

THE ROLE OF THE CONSUMER EMPLOYER:

We plan on developing classes with as much Consumer Employer participation as possible. In general, the CE, a family member, or advocate provides each PA with the necessary, primary on-the-job training. PPA‘s group classes are designed to supplement and support this in-home instruction.

In keeping with the role of Employer, the CE should be as involved as
     possible
in the training process, including trainings they cannot provide
     themselves:

·      When a PA attends a training class, the CE will receive a summary
of the
materials covered. Using this summary, s/he can discuss
specific issues of the class with the PA and tweak or supplement
the training to suit their personal needs. (In the case of health and
safety related classes such as “Universal Precautions” and “Lifting
and Transferring Safely,” the training summary will inform CEs of
the important protective and necessary guidelines.

·        All CEs are invited to attend and contribute to the group training classes offered to PAs. This will help us make these trainings as pertinent and useful as possible!

·        Active CE input will be specifically sought to help develop the “Independent Living Recipient Rights” and “Working with People with Disabilities” classes.

·        CEs will be invited to create an in-home PA training manual using a basic template provided by PPA. Kept solely in the CE's home, the manual will be designed to help the PA provide the highly individualized care all CEs deserve. Working independently—or  with some assistance from PPA or other CEs —the CE will develop the following for his/her in-home manual:

              1) A job description including qualifications and attributes
                  sought in a Personal Assistant

               2) An Emergency Plan including evacuation plan and
                   emergency contacts

               3) A document listing signs of health problems the CE
would like PA assistance in monitoring (for example,
                   skin condition/pressure sores)

               4) A set of work policies such as: "no smoking," "no
cell phone use," "PA must notify CE if unable to work"

               5) A basic plan of disciplinary steps to deal with violations
of the above mentioned, should they occur

               6) PA training class summaries and addendums

               7) Bi-annual PA evaluation forms

               8) Any other training materials which the CE would like the
                   PA to have
